During the “Life at the Extremes” expedition, the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian recorded the footage at a depth of about 250 m. Scientists noted that giant jellyfish are rarely seen because they live in deep water and have delicate body structures.

Deep-sea biodiversity along the continental margin

María Emilia Bravo, the expedition’s chief scientist, said the team was struck by the biodiversity found along the continental margin. The mission also documented other remarkable deep-sea features, including a large coral reef and a whale fall in deep water.
